The Early Influence of Trauma
When we think of the word “trauma”, there is an assumption that it is a “Big T” trauma, but any pain experienced is significant. Babies/children are very reliant on their caregivers to support nervous system regulation, and to provide a safe haven and a secure base. When caregivers fail to meet a child’s physical and emotional needs, it fosters confusion and fear, leading to doubts about safety and relationship reliability. This can result in ongoing trust/attachment issues and insecurity as the child matures. As one comes into adulthood these early wounds can continue to color the experience of the world (as one of unsafety) and influence health, relationships, self esteem, and the sense of belonging.
The Many Faces of Trauma
Trauma is not limited to adverse family dynamics; it can also stem from medical interventions that are perceived as invasive or frightening. Post traumatic stress disorder can arise after surviving an accident, or a health scare, loss of job or loved one, or any situation in your life that causes ongoing emotional and physical distress. PTSD can exacerbate any early traumas, and sometimes be the catalyst for anxiety, depression or other possible health issues such as chronic fatigue, IBS, chronic pain, and fibromyalgia to arise.
What to Expect in our Somatic Therapy Session
During our session I will help support your nervous system through therapeutic touch (with consent) with the intention of offering some settling. I will also provide insights into polyvagal theory and the complex nature of being human in a modern world, with a nervous system that is wired for survival. As a Somatic Trauma Therapist, it is my intention to provide a healing environment that prioritizes comfort, compassion, regulation, and personal choice.
