Somatic Therapy: Bridging Mind and Body for Anxiety, Depression, and Trauma.
Somatic therapy represents a revolutionary approach to mental health treatment that recognizes the profound connection between our psychological experiences and physical sensations. This body-oriented therapeutic method has emerged as a powerful tool for addressing anxiety, depression, and trauma by working with the wisdom of the nervous system and the body’s natural healing capacity.
What is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is based on the understanding that traumatic experiences, chronic stress, anxiety, and depression don’t just affect our minds—they become stored in our bodies as physical tension, altered breathing patterns, and dysregulated nervous system responses. The word “somatic” comes from the Greek word “soma,” meaning “the body in its wholeness.”
For Anxiety

“Why am I anxious all of the time?” “Why can’t I just relax?” Think of your body/mind like a car engine running too high, unable to slow down and rest. To restore balance, we need to support the nervous system to settle into a more regulated state.
- Teaches nervous system regulation techniques to calm hyperarousal
- Helps identify early physical warning signs of anxiety
- Uses gentle sensory-based exercises to anchor the body in the present, interrupting the anxiety (flight/fight) response
- Develops body-based resources for managing panic and worry
For Depression

“Why can’t I get out of bed?” “Why is my energy so low?” Using the car analogy: your system struggles as the gas tries to engage while the brake remains pressed on. Your body fights to return to a more regulated state, and you may feel exhausted, disconnected, as if in a fog.
- Addresses the physical symptoms of depression (fatigue, heaviness, disconnection)
- Reactivates the body’s natural energy and vitality
- Works with posture and movement to shift depressive states
- Helps reconnect with positive physical sensations and emotions
For Trauma

“Why am I struggling: what I went through wasn’t that bad?”. Trauma is a deeply personal experience; what may seem overwhelming to one person might appear less significant to someone else. Whether the pain stems from “Big-T” or “little-t” trauma, the resulting distress is real and worthy of care and validation. Healing is always possible.
- Processes trauma stored in the body without re-traumatization
- Helps complete interrupted survival responses (fight, flight, freeze)
- Builds resilience and capacity for handling stress
- Restores a sense of safety and empowerment in the body
